7. I understand the Director of this department has entered in the estimates for 1894 the amount
of $600, as an increase,
So my salary.
8. Incidental to my application for increase of salary on the merits of my work and length of service, I may add, that on appointment in 1883, I understood my salary to be equal to £250 per annum
basin with free quarters sterling in addition, This was calculated
on a
at the rate of 14½d to the dollar. But even at the dollar rate ruling
at
the time of my arrival in the colony it was equal to £225 and adding the allowance for quarters the total value of my salary and allowances was equal to £292 sterling. At present it is only equal to £195. Mainly on this ground, thirty-five percent (35%) increase of salary in 1890 awarded to
many officers of other departments.
9. In conclusion I may state that
as a married man it is a matter
of impossibility for me to live comfortably
on
my present salary and I therefore ask respectfully for a favourable consideration of this application
I have the honour to be, My Lord Marquess,
Your Lordship's most obedient humble servant.
